The Simon Mazorodze School of Medical and Health Sciences of Great Zimbabwe University was commissioned by His Excellency The President of the Republic of Zimbabwe on the 21 October 2022. The first cohort of the 3-year Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree, a prerequisite for the 3-year Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery Honours degree was enrolled on 26 March 2023.
Eighty percent (80%) of the curriculum being pursued by the students is standard for all medical Schools in Zimbabwe as guided by the Zimbabwe Council of Higher Education to ensure uniformity of medical graduates produced in the country. The remaining 20% of the curriculum is intended by institutional branding and uniqueness. The GZU being a heritage based institution chose traditional and herbal medicine to target its 20%.
The GZU medical graduates are expected to have dual competences in conventional medicine as well as in herbal and traditional medicine, making them unique not just in Zimbabwe but in the region and beyond.
